Product Development Process in Apparel Industry

The apparel product development process is a cycle that works to produce huge garment products. It’s an initial garment production system. It is finished with great care in any garment factory, so buyers never charge against it. To complete the process, every garment industries follow some fundamental rules.

In garment designing section, it starts after completing the sample development. They start this process by designing or sketching it with the model. First, they convert this design or sketch basic into 2D and then 3D. They follow all kinds of technical and strategic ways to make the process easy and effective.

The best buying house in Bangladesh strictly follows the product development process. In this article, we represent all kinds of practical ways for the product development process in the apparel industry.

What is Product Development?

Product development is a form of engineering and designing section for the product (clothes) creation according to the targeted customers. To give the final structure of the product, many designers work to develop its different parts like shape, size, etc. For that, each garment factory has a design and engineering department. The team works according to the direction of the leading designers who collect the information from merchandizers. After completing the final product in the design section room, it is sent to the next step.

Here are some steps with an explanation for developing the product process:

  • Identify the proper requirement of customers
  • Analyzing and researching competitive products
  • Helping to get specific needs of the customers
  • Idea generation over product development
  • Applying product expansion plan
  • Product testing over targeted customers
  • Improving the product by the researching the customer’s feedback
  • Product launching

As product development is an essential part of massive production in the garment industry, every garment owner should ensure the best importance on it.

Generally, it requires eight steps to generate the product development process in garment industries.

Research and Plan

It’s a primary step in the product development process in the apparel industry. A strategic plan can bring effective results to the industry. A garment industry’s product development team researches and gathers information on the product color, material, trends, running market position, past sales records, success or failure reports, etc. However, this information is for making the details of product creation.

Pattern Design

Firstly, the designing section accepts the design that is sent. In the design development section, designers make it as the 2D pattern that presents the design sketch. It helps to cut out the fabric to make a 3D prototype. The team reviews the product based on style, shape, fit, and others. Typically every garment industry has two approval sections for pattern generation: flat pattern cutting and draping.

It has twice improved on the flat cutting section: the basic pattern is known as the block pattern. Designers collect the first point for getting the expected dress. According to the sizing of the body, it takes an accurate measurement. They maintain a specific measurement that will let the prototype dress fitting alongside the areas of the body.

Draping is the 2nd approval used to create a pattern for the prototype garment. When garments designers can figure out the expected (similar) design, they make a duplicate design. Or, they make the clothes by tracing around the parts (manipulating) and duplicating them. Here it establishes the process of reviewing the prototype, making different patterns, and amending the pattern.

Seams and Openings

At the time of pattern development for the sample approval, designers become busy with its making and joining. However, it helps make the final product. Designers follow the full use of the clothes, market position, fabrics properties, and others. Depending on the selected joining method, it includes the relevant seam. The joining process contains the traditional sewn seams placing 3, 4, or 5 treads over the locker. However, it is possible to get non-sew technologies like ultrasonic welding and bonding equipment. Opening pattern refers to the button openings, zips, and others where their development implies binding, facings, trims, etc.

It’s a crucial step in the product development process in the apparel industry. In the costing department, crucial information (according to the product type) is necessary for a selling price that ensures profit for the company. It is regarded that about 50% of the cost is estimated on fabric choices. This department makes sure the labor incorporation, profit margin, overheads, and distribution look forward to estimating the final price.

Proper planning or measurement is necessary for the apparel product development process. In this section, designers make an approved sample to perform the sample size according to the demanding size. However, every garment company has a specific size range and body fit measurement for developing the product. Then it is necessary to create the primary block and approval prototype.

In the past, a tape measurement was used to take body dimensions. But right now, it is done by body scanners. And it is helpful for size measuring. It helps make a chart of apparel sizes and the specific finished measurement.

Grading is decreasing or increasing the pattern pieces to ensure the prototype sample size’s proper shape, appropriate measurement, and aesthetics. Designers retain it by following the size range. The scale of the grading is that it applies to a pattern piece within the set of patterns based on position.

Two-dimensional and three-dimensional is the board system of grading. Here two-dimensional grading can grade the pattern with girth and height where darts are not acceptable. And three-dimensional grading works for decreasing or increasing the compression and pattern size. For that, it is significant to keep skilled designers for grading purposes.

Production Lay Marker/Plan

In this step, designers lay a plan and then create a series of production. However, these are not dissimilar to the costing lay plans, but they will include various sizes to ensure the actual quantities of color and size. Then they are cut and made ready for production. It is the optimum utilization achievement.

Fabric cutting plays a vital role in the product development process in the apparel industry. It’s a basic idea for making a garment product. According to the quantity, designers plan it when making the lay plan. They spread the fabrics to guess the idea of the lay plan. Until getting the actual amount of plies for fabric, it’s laid on the top. However, it helps to precise the sizes and quantities of the garment product cutting. Then they send the cut items to the manufacturing section.

Final Thought:

To recapitulate, we can say that the apparel product development process can simplify the production of the garment industry. The eight steps are vital for attaining the goal for the desired production.
